MEDIA ADVISORY November 5, 2007 CHOIR Coalition and Herring Alliance Call on New England Fishery Management Council (NEFMC) to Protect Atlantic Herring NEWPORT, Rhode Island - As fishing regulators gather for this week's New England Fishery Management Council meeting, fishermen and ocean conservation groups are jointly calling on officials to reform the commercial herring industry. The industry is becoming increasingly dominated by high-volume industrial ships known as mid-water trawlers. These ships threaten the health of herring stocks and all that depend on this key food source. WHAT: Press conference hosted by representatives from the CHOIR Coalition and Herring Alliance at the site of the NEFMC meeting to discuss the effects of herring mid-water trawlers and how loopholes in fishing regulations are hurting New England's economy and ecosystem WHEN: Tuesday, November 6 at 11:00 a.m. EST WHO: * Peter Baker - Director, Herring Alliance, Pew Environment Group * Ray Kane - Vice Chair, CHOIR * Roger Fleming - Attorney, Earthjustice WHERE: Colonnade Room, Hotel Viking, One Bellevue Avenue, Newport, Rhode Island DIRECTIONS: I-95 South to Route 4 (exit 9). Follow Route 4 South (turns into Route 1 South). Take exit marked Route 138 East to the Jamestown/Verrazano Bridge. Cross Jamestown/Verrazano bridge and the Newport Claiborne Pell Bridge. Take first exit off the Pell Bridge. Right onto Farewell Street. Follow to the second traffic light, and bear left. Bear right onto Thames Street. Turn left onto Touro Street at the first traffic light. Turn right at the second traffic light into the Hotel Viking's driveway at One Bellevue Avenue.
