NEFMC Amendment 4 Update: Stakeholders Overwhelmingly Call for Change
The Scoping period for Amendment 4 to the Federal Fishery Management Plan for Atlantic herring closed on June 30 2008.  Nearly 10,000 comments were received, including extensive recommendations from The Herring Alliance

Thanks in large part to public stakeholders alerted to this crisis concerning our shared marine resources by the Herring Alliance and by the Herring Alliance partner organizations, the Council has received a strong message that it is time to reform this poorly managed fishery before it's too late.  As documented in the Herring Alliance report Out of Balance this industrial scale fishery has far outpaced the management infrastructure relied on to asess and control its impacts.

Here is a link to an NEFMC staff presentation summarizing the Scoping comments, which demonstrates that of the approximately 10,000 comments received, the vast majority favored such common sense reforms as 100% observer coverage and coastal buffer zones to protect threatened species like river herring:  CLICK HERE
