Progress toward regulating industrial trawlers
Federal regulators of ocean fishing operations are nearing completion of new sets of rules that could deliver considerable progress in reducing the accidental catch of river herring, haddock and other marine life by vessels fishing for Atlantic herring, mackerel and squid in New England and Mid-Atlantic waters. Currently, the proposed management measures are being analyzed for their environmental and socio-economic impacts and will likely be ready for public comment later this fall.
